Everett Maynard, a former West Virginia police officer has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for violating the civil rights of a person under arrest by using excessive force.
The person who was under arrest was rendered unconscious and suffered a broken shoulder, a broken nose and a cut to his head that required staples to close, prosecutors said. The following images were stills taken from surveillance footage from Logan Jail inside Logan City Hall showing the abuse taking place. After the victim is dragged out of the scene, Maynard can be seen giving the camera the middle finger.
“When Mr. Maynard abused his position of authority to violate the civil rights of an arrestee, he betrayed the public’s trust and dishonored the policing profession,” Will Thompson, U.S. attorney for West Virginia’s southern district, said in a statement.
Will this out of control officer fulfill the full 9 year sentence or will "other circumstances" lead to an early release? Let's keep watching law enforcement officers in small towns like Logan, West Virginia. Hopefully, a few First Amendment Auditors will pay the city hall a visit.
