Antioch, California, former all-white, sundown town in Northern California, is led by Mayor Lamar Thorpe who was pulled over by California Highway Patrol in the wee hours of Saturday morning, March 19, 2022 and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Heading northbound on I-680, Mayor Thorpe was the only person traveling in a Volvo before it was pulled over. After being arrested around 1:30 that morning, the Antioch mayor was released from jail about 2 hours later.
In a video apology statement released by Mayor Thorpe and posted on his Twitter account, he exclaims, "Although I never felt inhibited by the drink I had with my dinner, I'm deeply sorry for the lapse in judgment and I hope that you can forgive me."
Valid Media's in-depth research uncovered more details surrounding the troubled mayor and his past as a youth growing up in East Los Angeles. According to a blog post about Lamar Thorpe, the elected official was born in prison to a heroin addicted mother, raised in foster care by Spanish speaking immigrant foster parents from Mexico, learned English as a second language in middle school, educated in special education classes, and served in the U.S. Navy for eight years. At the time the article was posted, Mayor Thorpe was married to his wife, Patrice, and the father of a young daughter, Kennedy.
Will Antioch's mayor, Lamar Thorpe, resign from his seat or will he take responsibility and make this wrong a right? Will those who voted for Mayor Thorpe continue showing support or will they put pressure on the mayor to step down?
Valid Media will keep an eye on Antioch, California and their elected officials and will keep you posted.
